Our Story

The Upfront Theatre is a nonprofit improv theatre in Bellingham, WA, offering live improv comedy performances, classes, and private events and workshops. Originally established in 2004 by world renowned improviser, Ryan Stiles, The Upfront Theatre transitioned to a nonprofit organization in 2020, rededicating itself to bringing laughter and joy to all. The Upfront is for all-ages and people of all walks of life searching for a good time.

The Upfront has performed and taught many unique styles and formats of improvisation. Notably, we are known for our long form narrative shows including our popular murder mystery Hellingham, and other genre long forms such as An Improvised Musical, Space Trek and many more. We continue to produce and evolve shows each year to further the art of improvisation and keep our community with us on the edge.

The Upfront has hosted events from internationally known improvisers like Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Jeff Davis, Keith Johnstone, Joe Bill, Kevin McDonald and more. Our

Mainstage Ensemble has performed and taught at festivals and events all over North America including: The Chicago Improv Festival, The Vancouver International Festival, Seattle International Festival of Improv, Vancouver TheatreSports Throwdown (formerly Valentines Massacre), Edmonton’s Improvaganza and more. Our theatre has received the Mayor’s Arts award, been voted “Best Theatre” to “Best Live Comedy” and one of our favorites “Best Date Night” in the Best of the Northwest and Best of Bellingham
